"All diseases begin in the gut"
~Hippocrates
Hippocrates might have been an old kook but he wasn't far from the truth. Have you ever had butterflies in your stomach? Not literally but felt that queasy feeling in the pit of your stomach whenever you were faced with situations that made you nervous? Or have you had a 'feeling' that something was not 'right' and felt physical pain in your stomach because of it?
Or do you have any of the following conditions?
- Severe gas or bloating
- Diarrhea and constipation
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn's or Celiac Disease
- Gluten intolerance
- Multiple food sensitivities or allergies
- Autoimmune disease or inflammatory arthritis
- Weight Gain
- Sugar Cravings
- Joint pain or swelling
- Severe mental fog or fatigue
- Skin rashes, breakouts or acne
- Eczema or Psoriasis
- Constant nasal or sinus congestion
- Migraine headaches
- Depression or Mood Swings
If you’ve answered yes to one or more of these symptoms, you may have what my mom had and what my children have, a condition called Leaky Gut Syndrome - Dysbiosis of the Intestines - dysbiosis for short.
Find out if you have Dysbiosis by clicking on the image below.
Before I get into the scientific explanation of what Dysbiosis is, let me tell you about my family's health issues. You may know a little about my children's struggles with Eczema and allergies from this post and this post. But first, about my mother.
My Mother
My mother was diagnosed with "Rheumatoid Arthritis" when she was about my age - fifty two years 'young'. It was a devastating diagnosis for us. She had just retired from her 70 hour a week business and was ready to enjoy what "retired" people normally do: gardening, playing with grandkids, traveling, etc.
But she was in constant pain from inflammation in the joints and couldn't sleep or move freely. She had no strength in her hands and couldn't go up a flight of stairs without stopping.
Her doctors prescribed Prednisone and a cocktail of strong anti-inflammatory drugs. Despite her doctors' confident protocol for managing her arthritis, my mom felt worse. She gained weight from Prednisone and she was still in constant pain. She couldn't sleep well and came down with Pneumonia every winter. She dreaded cold damp weather and felt helpless.
It wasn't until I learned about Dysbiosis from my Chiropractic training that made me realize what her real problem was and I was the only one who had hopes to help her. No other doctor we went to see even heard of Dysbiosis. And when I mentioned it to them, they shook their heads and told us, there was no such a thing.
My Children
As you know, both of my children suffer from Eczema from as I posted about our ordeal here and here. But what I didn't emphasize was that they have multiple, M.U.L.T.I.P.L.E. food allergies. And when I say, multiple, you'd wonder how they are still alive if they can't eat all those foods that they are allergic to. I wonder sometimes too.
But the better question is "Why?" Why are they allergic to so many foods and why are their bodies reacting to these common foods that they were able to eat before?
The answer is Dysbiosis.
What is Dysbiosis or Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Without going into a boring Anatomy and Physiology lecture, imagine your intestinal lining like your skin. Actually, it's just a like your skin, except, it lines your intestine instead of the outside of the body. And just like your skin being the biggest organ in your body and it's the first line of defense, your long intestinal lining is also the first line of defense against bacteria.
It produces about 80% of your immune cells and 90% of serotonin. Normally, it absorbs the good stuff so your blood stream can get proper nutrition your body needs and block the bad stuff (like bacteria and virus) so you don't get sick. And all that serotonin that it produces is responsible for brain function. You know saying, "trust your gut"? That's because the gut produces most of the serotonin, the neurotransmitters that your brain needs. Gut knows before the rain does! Go figure!
But when your intestinal lining gets sick, the toxins and undigested foods leak through the intestinal lining because the tight junctions between the cells of your intestinal lining get loose. As result, the good, bad and ugly seep out of the intestine, flooding the body with what the body recognizes as 'foreign' particles, hence the term, LEAKY GUT.
Why does your gut become leaky this way? It may be due to drugs like antibiotics, chemotherapy, NSAID, stress, infection, and more.
What does Doctor Oz say about Leaky Gut Syndrome
Dysbiosis is not new. The theory has been around for a long time. I've treated many patients with Dysbiosis with great success and I firmly believe that it can cause many idiopathic conditions that doctors can't explain. But conventional western doctors haven't embraced the diagnosis because they are just learning about it. But watch what Dr Oz says about Leaky Gut Syndrome HERE.
So what can you do?
How you can heal your gut & heal your life
Like I said, I've treated many patients with Dysbiosis, including my family, with detox, diet, supplements, lifestyle changes and education. While my family is not completely 'cured' yet but they are 90 percent better. Yes, they have their 'moments' and they have had set backs but they know how to get back on track when they lose their ways.
After seeing the results of my family reclaiming their healthy gut, I wanted to help those of you who are suffering from leaky gut too. And while trying to create a protocol for you, I came across this amazing program called "How to Solve Leaky Gut and Reverse Chronic Illness" by two survivors of Leaky Gut Syndrome. They worked with renown doctors to create the 10 hour long program that is spot on, easy to understand, and possible to follow. Why reinvent the wheel when I can use the system to help YOU! And it costs a fraction of the cost if I had created it!

iamgreenbean You are right. It's scary that this connection is becoming more prevalent than even ten years ago. But glad it's becoming into light and more doctors are being educated about it.

It seems today that so many illnesses are tied to leaky gut! Thank you for highlighting this.
